DUBROVNIK
South of Split lies the walled medieval city of
Dubrovnik, site of an important arts festival in the summer and
a magical place to be whatever the season.
The main tourist resorts south of Dubrovnik, Mlini
and Cavtat, are within easy reach of the city by public
transport. In addition, Dubrovnik’s port is the natural gateway to
the south most islands of the Croatian Adriatic, with the sparsely
populated, semi-wild islands of Koločep, Lopud and
Sipan providing beach-hoppers with a wealth of out-of-town
bathing opportunities.
Slightly further out to sea, the
green island of Mljet is one of the most beautiful on the
entire coast.
THE PELJESAC
PENINSULA
Just across the Peljesac channel
(Peljeski Kanal) from Korcula is the Peljesac Peninsula, a
slim mountainous finger of land. Part of the peninsula is
exceptionally beautiful, with tiny villages and sheltered coves
rimmed by beaches.
ISLAND OF KORCULA
Korcula
is one of the greenest of the Adriatic islands and one of the most
popular, thanks almost entirely to the charms of its main
settlement, Korcula town, whose surviving fortifications jut
out to sea like the bastions of an overgrown sandcastle.
There are good beaches at the
village of Lumbarda 7km away and Prizna.
